Heretaunga Ararau o Ngati Kahungunu Waka Ama Roopu

Waka Ama outriggers are congregated on the side of a river

Our Roopu adopted its name from the area in which it is established.
Heretaunga Ararau refers to the Maori Ancestral name of this region now commonly known as Hastings District.

Ngati Kahungunu, is our local Iwi of the region

Kaupapa/Mission Statement

To provide Community based Waka Ama programs that encourage both Whanau and individual participation, competition and a healthy lifestyle, promoted within a safe, nurturing and fun environment.

History

Heretaunga Waka Ama was originally established in February 2002. It became an incorporated Society in October 2002.
It is located on Te Awa Mokotūāraro riverbank (formerly Clive River), opposite the HB Rowing Club.
Our club colours are Red and White with a Black motif/logo
Our membership spans over Midget teams (5yrs+) through to Golden Master (70yrs+) representatives.

“The Wall” – which Kaihoe (Paddlers) and Waka confront and break through during hoe
The Waka = the vessel of challenge/enjoyment within oneself and the Roopu
Kaihoe (Paddler) = membership of the Roopu
One “Wave” – that of nga Awa (Rivers), Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro, and Mokotūāraro
One “Wave: – that of Tangaroa (The Sea)
