Waka congregated at the edge of a river

Kia Ora, Hello, Malo’elei, Talofa lava, Kia Orana

Welcome to Heretaunga Ararau O Ngati Kahungunu Waka Ama Roopu.

We are based in the beautiful tranquil setting of the Mokotūāraro river and are blessed to be able to use the three Awa, Mokotūāraro, Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri as our playground.

We boast a fantastic family, supportive environment to learn the skill of paddling and encourage paddlers of all ages.

You are never too young, nor too old to paddle with Heretaunga Ararau O Ngati Kahungunu Waka Ama Roopu.

Our Kaupapa and Mission

To provide Community-based Waka Ama programs that encourage both Whanau and individual participation, competition and healthy lifestyle, promoted within a safe, nurturing and fun environment.

Learn our Tikanga

Tikanga is derived from the Māori word ‘tika’ which means ‘right’ or ‘correct’. So, in Māori terms, to act in accordance with tikanga is to behave in a way that is culturally proper or appropriate.

Māori trace their origins to ancestors who migrated here in voyaging waka bringing their history, atua (gods), customs, values, and beliefs.

Because of this, many waka ama clubs in New Zealand recognise tikanga or customs regarding the use of waka ama, including our club. These affect how we behave in and around the waka.

Heretaunga Waka Ama were part of a research project conducted by Massey University. Waka ama is the fastest growing sport in Aotearoa, and is increasingly used as a vehicle for health promotion. Waka ama is unique as a sport because, as well as the physical benefits for paddlers, it also has a strong tikanga and encourages te reo Māori through karakia, waiata and the general terms used associated with waka. The short film showcases waka ama and its contribution to the health of paddlers, featuring interviews with paddlers and footage of waka ama action. It presents an exemplar of best practice in local health promotion, contributing to the evidence base of effective indigenous health promotion.
